The method involves using several traffic sources (1-n), and sinks, which are connected to a network, through the connection units (NT0-NTn) to the common medium (10) of transmission, e.g. a tree network as a passive optical network. The upstream and downstream directions are physically separated. All messages in the downstream direction (12), can go through the tree to all the terminal units. In the upstream direction (11), only one terminal unit has immediate access to the tree. The ATM network works as an upstream traffic concentrator, whose transmitting capacity of the connecting line terminator interface is smaller than the sum of the maximum bit rates offered by the connection units.
