A reflective copper-free metallic layer (eg silver) is formed on a transparent substrate (eg glass) and protected by applying to it a polymer in powder form (eg electrostatically) which is then cured. A silane compound may be applied on the metal before the polymer coating, which is preferably thermosetting.
