Base electrode structure for direct-current arc furnace

In a novel base electrode structure for a direct-current arc furnace, sheet electrodes are set in a metal base plate, with cooling below. The region above the base plate (1) is refractory-clad, up to the upper edge of the electrodes. The base plate is electrically-insulated from the furnace vessel contents. In the novelty, the base plate has rows of individual slots (2), offset in alternate rows. An electrode sheet (3) passes through each, reaching down below the base plate, where it is fastened to a sheet channel (4) passing under each row of slots. The channel has a rectangular section, with side wall recesses completed by the sections descending below the base plate (1).
