Locking clutch for torque converter in automobile automatic transmission

The locking clutch (13) is divided internally into a clutch engagement chamber (17) and a release chamber (18), with operation of the clutch in dependence on the pressure difference between these chambers. A locking magnet (24) provides a control oil pressure altered via the pulse width ratio of a supplied pulse signal for control of a pressure regulating valve (20) coupled to the clutch engagement chamber and the release chamber via respective oil lines (R1,R2). The pulse width ratio of the pulse signal is altered at a given rate by an automatic transmission control (31), for controlling the clutch engagement.
