The device has a container (3) holding a fluid (4), e.g. a mixture of glycol and water, which is vaporised for providing a fog in the protected room upon detonation of a pyrotechnic heating capsule (8) immersed in the fluid. Preferably, the heating capsule has a heating insert (9) and a pyrotechnic detonation device (10) enclosed in an outer mantle (11), having rupture openings for releasing heat into the fluid open detonation.
