<p>This invention is directed to the production of spontaneous essentially non-crystalline opal glasses exhibiting a very dense, milky-white appearance and excellent resistance to weathering and attack by alkaline detergents consisting essentially, expressed in weight percent on the oxide basis, of 1.9-3.6 % K2O, 4.2-7.3 % Na2O, 0.2-3 % Li2O, 0-1.2 % MgO, 0-4 % CaO, 0-12.5 % BaO, 0-0.1 % NiO, 0.4-4 % ZnO, 5.3-9.6 % B2O3, 8.8-13.5 % Al2O3, 57.2-64.4 % SiO2, and 1.0-2.2 % F, where the sum of (MgO+CaO+BaO) is preferably in the range of 4.5-12.5 %.</p> |
