PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain sufficient contrast, improve accuracy, and enhance a yield. SOLUTION: When voltage is impressed on auxiliary discharge electrode pairs 140, auxiliary discharge is generated in a space 3c. When voltage is impressed between main electrodes 5f and 9c, an excited charged particle enters a main discharge space 3d by passing through an electrically continuity passage 3e of a discharge space separating partition wall 13. When AC voltage is impressed on main discharge electrode pairs 60 in such a condition, main discharge is generated in the space 3d. A Xe atom in sealing gas generates ultraviolet rays by this main discharge, and a phosphor 14 emits the light thereby. However, since the auxiliary discharge is shielded by the partition wall 13 and a barrier rib 12, the phosphor 14 does not emit the light only by the auxiliary discharge. The electrode pairs 60 and 140 are composed of the main electrodes 5f and 9c and common electrodes 5d and 9d striding over cell rows. The respective cell rows have common two electrode pairs of the main 5f and 9c. |
