In a television receiving set having an intermediate frequency amplifier and an image detector, the apparatus for determining an intermediate frequency gain level comprises a detecting unit for detecting an output frequency signal from the image detector according to an input of a test signal to the intermediate frequency amplifier; a saturation deciding unit for deciding a saturation or non-saturation state of the output frequency signal on the basis of a detection result from the detecting unit; and a determining unit for determining a gain of the intermediate frequency amplifier as the maximum level before the saturation decision is performed by the saturation deciding unit, thereby automatically determining a gain level of an intermediate frequency circuit in TV.
