962,300. Hydraulic jet propulsion. AEROJET-GENERAL CORPORATION. May 23, 1962, No. 19810/62. Heading B7V. [Also in Division F1] A propulsion device for watercraft comprises a pump 12, mounted above the water line of the craft, a water intake 20 positioned below the pump, a duct 24 connecting the pump and the intake, an exhaust outlet 74 for the pump, and a power source (not shown) for driving the pump, the pump including a rotatable impeller 52 and a housing 50 fixedly attached thereto for rotation therewith. The pump 12 has vanes 70 and is separated from the bearing section 18 by a gap 32 so that it may be rotated by a power means through the shaft 28 to draw water through the intake 20 and duct 24 and expel it through a plurality of angled orifices 74 around the periphery of plate 54. The device may be provided with a steering deflector comprising two arcuate plates disposed around the jet to control the angle at which it is discharged. The device may have a reversing deflector comprising an annular trough which may be moved axially into the path of the jet to deflect it forward. A further embodiment describes a pump having a plurality of passageways positioned at right angles to the axis of the impeller and a plurality of exhaust nozzles attached to the housing, each communicating with a passageway and having an aperture inclined to the axis of the impeller. Another embodiment describes a reservoir from which the pump draws water. The device may be incorporated into an outboard propulsion unit. The pump may be of the axial-flow type.
|
