PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply produce a printing plate having excellent printing characteristics by an environmentally gentle method. SOLUTION: An image forming element obtained by an image forming layer wherein hydrophobic thermoplastic polymer particles are dispersed in a hydrophilic binder on the hydrophilic surface of a planograpahic base and containing a compd. capable of converting light to heat in the image forming layer or the layer adjacent thereto is imagewise exposed. The imagewise exposed image forming element thus obtained is rinsed with ordinary water or an aq. liquid to be developed to produce a planographic printing plate.
