PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing an optical fiber preform capable of forming a porous glass body having an inclined end of a conical shape in surface shape which is free from a difference in level at both ends and ruggedness and is smooth and attaining early stabilization in the initial period of a drawing stage. SOLUTION: A glass rod 1 corresponding to a core is rotated and burners 2 for forming glass particulates are relatively moved back and forth in the axial direction of this glass rod 1 to form a porous glass layer 6 on the outer periphery of the glass rod 1, by which the porous glass preform is formed. Forming burners 10 are arranged in the inverting parts of the burners 2 for forming the glass particulates at both ends of the glass rod 1 to form the porous glass layer 6 consisting of the glass particulates on the outer periphery of the glass rod 1.
