PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the porous body which is friendly to global environment and has sufficient strength and heat resistance and in which cracks due to drying is inhibited from being generated in the production process by subjecting a mixed sol contg. clay, water glass and fiber to specific freeze-drying treatment. SOLUTION: In this production, a clay sol (A) having a 1 to 40wt.% solid content, a water glass aqueous dispersion (B) contg. water glass in a 1 to 40wt.% concn. and in an amount sufficient to provide a 5 to 20wt.% ratio of the water glass to the clay and a fiber aqueous dispersion (C) contg. fiber, or preferably nonflammable fiber in a 1 to 40wt.% concn. and in an amount sufficient to provide a 1 to 20wt.% ratio of the fiber to the clay are mixed and agitated to prepare a mixed sol. This mixed sol is freezed at a >=1×10<-2> ml/ sec average freezing rate and thereafter, subjected to freeze-drying to produce the objective clay composite porous body.
