PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-density digital recording medium with which the compatibility of excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics with an excellent traveling property and durability is attained by regulating the relation of the surface roughness of a base. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is constituted by applying a magnetic layer of 3500 to 5000G in saturation magnetic flux density Bm in a traveling direction, 1800 to 2100 Oe in coercive force Hc, 2 to 5mm in surface roughness SRa and 0.1 to 0.3μm in thickness on one surface of the base. The total thickness of this medium is 5 to 8μm. The magnetic layer coating side surface roughness of this base, designated as R1, the other surface roughness, as R2, and the thickness of the magnetic layer as (d), are specified to R2/10<=R1<=R2 and d/3<=100R1. The surface roughness of the base is regulated to the prescribed value in such a manner, by which the magnetic recording medium having the excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and the excellent traveling property and durability is obtd. and the magnetic recording medium adequate as the high-density digital recording medium is obtd.
