A practice projectile comprising a shell made, e.g., of cardboard and filled with a ballast material consisting of a compact dried clay core. The use of a compact dried clay core as the ballast material has a number of advantages. Firstly, it enables a low-cost projectile to be achieved that has sufficient accuracy and ballistic range for practice shooting over a short distance, i.e. less than 100 metres. Furthermore, the specific gravity of the projectile is, in practice, sufficient to produce a satisfactory recoil effect when the shot is fired. Finally, on impact, the dried clay block breaks up without damaging the shooting range and leaves completely biodegradable and non-pollutant residues.
