PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure gradient display such that the ratio between respective display periods accurately becomes 1:R:...:R<n-1> (integer of 2 or above). SOLUTION: In a matrix type display having scanning electrode L1 -L7 , time divisional display is carried out such that with the number of gradient being 4 the scanning electrode is scanned three times and the time ratios of 1st-3rd display periods become X:RX:...:R<n-1> X (X>0). R and n is specified as e.g. R=4, n=3 so that the following relation is established: ROTn (X)≠ROTn ((1+R)X),..., ROTn (X)≠ROTn ((1+R+...R<n-2> )X), ROTn (1+R+...R<n-2> )X)≠ROTn ((1+R +...R<n-1> )X)=0, with the remainder being ROT3 (a) when a (a>=0) is divided by 3, while X is set e.g. 1 so that the following relation is established: (1+ R+...R<n-1> )X=n(m+b), where (b>=0), and then data corresponding to the respective 1st-3rd display periods are displayed as the respective selection periods of the a, the Xa,... (1+R+...R<n-2> )X+a.
