PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a possible steam explosion due to molten radioactive substances and cooling water by confirming whether a crack has occurred in a water-cooled copper wall crucible and by detecting the inflow permeation or leakage diffusion of radioactive substances into the cooling water in the melting and solidification of radioactive metallic wastes. SOLUTION: The radioactivity of cooling water is detected on the outlet side of the cooling water cooling a water-cooled copper wall of a water-cooled crucible induction furnace where the water-cooled copper wall is used as a crucible. Then, an induction coil 13 is placed on the top outside the wall and there is a space for melting radioactive metallic wastes 1 inside it. Moreover, a starting block 8 is placed in the bottom of the melting space, and a water- cooled copper wall crucible 4 is provided whose copper wall incorporates a cooling water passage connected with a cooling water outlet 9 where a radioactivity detector 2 is placed on the outlet side and a cooling water intake 10.
