PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which has a high contrast, a high transmitted light luminance, less tone change, and is superior in visual characteristic. SOLUTION: At least a liquid crystal layer LC interposed between a pair of substrates SUB1 and SUB2 having electrodes 1701 and 1702, oriented films OR11 and OR12 formed on interfaces to the liquid crystal layer, a pair of polarizing plates POL1 and POL2 provided on both sides of the liquid crystal layer, and a control means TFT which applies a binary or more valued voltage between electrodes to change the quantity of transmitted light of the liquid crystal layer are provided. Polarizing plates are so arranged that the quantity of transmitted light in the change state of the angle of inclination of liquid crystal molecules is smaller than that for application of a maximum voltage V1 at the time of applying a voltage V2 lower than the maximum voltage V1 of a binary or more valued voltage, and a double refraction medium PUL which has a phase difference equal or close to the residual phase difference of liquid crystal molecules in the interface parts to substrates in applying the voltage V2 is arranged between polarizing plates and the liquid crystal layer. Thus, relations of the transmittance to applied voltage of respective colors of a filter layer are approximately equalized. |
