PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing method for overwritable information which is capable of executing recording, reproducing and erasing of the information with a simple optical system by using a recording film of a reversible phase transition type allowing a high-speed phase transition and records the fresh information while erasing the existing information. SOLUTION: This recording and reproducing method for the information comprises recording the information by forming recording marks on an information recording medium by irradiation with light and reproducing the recorded information. The recording and reproducing method for the information described above comprises forming the recording marks by first raising the light power to the second light power level than the first light power level at the time of information reproducing and raising the light power to the third light power level higher than the second light power level at the time of executing the recording of the information.
