CARBONYLATION REACTIONS

The invention provides a process for the carbonylation of an olefinically or acetylenically unsaturated compound which conmprises: (a) reacting the unsaturated compound with carbon monoxide and a co-reactant in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst, obtainable by combining a source of platinum group metal cations, a phosphine ligand and an anion, to produce a reaction mixture comprising a carbonylation product, the carbonylation catalyst, and excess of the olefinically or acetylenically unsaturated compound and/or the co-reactant, and (b) recovering the carbonylation product by distillation of the reaction mixture, wherein a catalytically active concentrate is removed from the reaction mixture prior to step (b).
