A healthy, knotty, thinned out round tree-trunk is divided into a thicker central board (3) containing the core and thinner side boards (4) with year rings (5) over their width. After drying, the cut material is formed into strips, with year rings spread over their width, by sharp-edged separation of at least the central board and by cuts parallel to the narrow sides. The strips are then glued to form a carpet, which is then divided into lengths which are laid one on top of the other and glued to one another to form a beam. Sections of the beam are formed by cuts running crossways to the layering of the strips in order to constitute lamellas with upright year rings over their width.
