The mail box (1) has a programmer (5) which controls an optical reader (11) which checks that a letter has been correctly mailed. On acceptance of a letter an electric motor (12) of a belt (7) is activated to convey the letter to a date and time stamp (13). A second optical reader (14) checks the stamp and, on acceptance, the motor is restarted to drop the letter to the bottom of the box. A photoelectric cell (15) checks the level of the pile of letters (16) on the bottom of the box in order to reject treatment of further letters mailed when the level has reached a threshold.
