Disclosed is a process for determining the effect of an adjustment of final control elements used in the manufacture of a material web, said control elements being distributed over the web width and influencing the web characteristics. The process is characterised in that: when at least one of the final control elements is adjusted, a prediction on the effect of the adjustment is made on the basis of known values via the behaviour of the web characteristics-cross section as the control elements are adjusted; at least one web characteristics-cross section is measured before and after adjustment of the control elements; the prediction on the effect of the control element adjustments is compared to the measured effect; the current known values are adjusted until a better match is obtained between the predicted and measured effects.
