A method of making an optical fibre with smooth annular ring refractive index profile comprises heating a clad quartz tube and supplying SiCl 4 GeCl 4 , and O 2 to deposit a core section inside the tube in a plurality of passes of decreasing temperature, decreasing SiCl 4 feed flow and increasing GeCl 4 feed flow.
