A packet-based telecommunications system 20 for carrying calls between subscribers S1, S2, has a call processor 24 for calculating an equivalent bandwidth of a new call, and for identifying if the system has sufficient capacity to accept that call, and an accounting centre 23 to charge subscribers for their calls. Call processor 24 is coupled 25 to the accounting centre 23 and passes the equivalent bandwidth information to the accounting centre. The accounting centre may use the equivalent bandwidth information in a cost model to charge a subscriber for their call. System 20 may be a broadband ATM system. |
