PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production process whereby cellulose sol. in an aq. alkali soln. can be produced safely and advantageously while causing a relatively little degradation in the degree of polymn. SOLUTION: Cellulose is converted into microfibers of which the number of microfibrils having diameters of 1μm or lower accounts for at least 95% of that of all the microfibrils, thus giving cellulose sol. in an alkali soln. Pref. the number of microfibrils having diameters of 500nm or lower accounts for at least 90% of that of all the microfibrils. Still pref. the conversion into microfibrils is performed with a wet grinder which uses shearing force, compression force, etc., applied by a rotating wheelstone.
