Resins are obtained by reacting bis-chloromethyl-benzenes with a terpene phenol obtained by an addition reaction between a terpene hydrocarbon and a phenol, or by reacting the bis-chloromethyl-benzene with a mixture of the terpene phenol and a phenol which may have an aliphatic side chain. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent at 100 DEG to 150 DEG C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst or zinc dust. The product may be hydrogenated. In examples bis-chloromethyl-xylene is reacted with terpene-phenols obtained from phenol and camphene, phenol and a -pinene, and phenol and a mixture of a -pinene, b -pinene, camphene, dipentene and b -phellandrene; in some instances the reaction mixture includes para-sec. butyphenol, isononylphenol, phenol and a cresol mixture. |
