PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a seed germination promoter consisting of a water-based gel, capable of accomplishing high germination rate and good germination evenness, leading to improving plant productivity, mechanization of its harvesting work and labor saving. SOLUTION: This seed germination promoter consists of a water-based gel >=80wt.% in water content composed of a gel-forming main agent such as sodium alginate or pectin and a cross-linking agent such as calcium sulfate. Seeds 3 are pref. sown in combination with this germination promoter 2a and it is also preferable that hydrogen peroxide be incorporated, according as appropriate, into the gel to ensure roots in growth to be fed with sufficient oxygen.
