PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for producing a glyoxylic acid ethyl ester in high productivity and in high selectivity and yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the glyoxylic acid ethyl ester contains (1) a process for oxidizing diethyl fumarate and/or diethyl maleate with ozone in an ester solvent to produce the reaction mixture containing the ozonide, and (2) a process for holding the reaction mixture at a temperature and for a time selected so as to satisfy the following inequality (I), and does not contain a hydrogenation process, 500×e<-0.03> T<=τ<=2500×e<-0.02> T (I) (T is the temperature ( deg.C) of the reaction mixture:τis a time (min) for holding at the temperature T).
