PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make neat packaging possible without requiring correction for deviation in placement by a method wherein the amount of deviation from the reference point of a packaging machine in the direction intersecting the direction of carriage for articles placed on a mounting table is detected, and changes are made in controls for the packaging machine. SOLUTION: The size of an article including the length L, the width W, the height H and the amount of deviationΔL are detected on starting and executing of bringing-in of the article. W and H are detected with a sensor 3a while the article is in process of bringing-in, and L andΔL are decided, based of the results of detection made by reflecting optical sensors on the right and the left constituting a placement deviation and dimension detecting device. In the case where any deviation is existent in placement of the article, changes are made in controls for each of items including centering of a film, timing for starting and stopping operations of folding-up plates 10 and 10' on the right and the left, and timing for release of a film clamp. Thereby, packaging can be made in a finishing above a certain level without being influenced by deviation in placement.
