PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To nicely use of remaining activity of a catalyst for an exhaust gas purifying apparatus. SOLUTION: In a exhaust gas purifying apparatus for which a catalyst unit manufactured by layering a plurality of rectangular and sheet-like catalyst elements 10 composed by alternately arranging flat parts 1 and projected parts 2 extended in vertical direction is used, a catalyst layer is formed by the catalyst unit in which all of the projected parts 2 are so assembled as to be parallel to the exhaust gas flow at the time of initial charging and at least a part of the catalyst unit is taken out and then the catalyst elements 10 are re-arranged as to make a projected part 2 of the catalyst elements 10 cross a neighboring projected part of the catalyst elements 10 at right angles after gas is introduced for a prescribed period.
