PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject base material consisting of a foamed resin material having a specific physical property and an unfoamed layer on its surface, excellent in chemical resistance, not generating a waste material, and useful as a label for the bottle of a solvent, etc. SOLUTION: This foamed resin base material for inscription consists of a foamed resin material having <=100μm, preferably <=20μm mean cell diameter in its cross section, >=3 fold, especially preferably >=4 fold foaming ratio and <=30μm, especially preferably <=20μm thickness having an unfoamed layer on its surface. The above foamed resin material is preferably the one formed mainly of a saturated polyester foamed material, preferably a polyethylene terephthalate. Also, the foamed resin material used for the above base material for inscription is capable of being inscribed letters or codes on its surface by compressing the surface with e.g. a rod-like material or a substance having an uneven shape made from a plastic or a metal.
