PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new agent for preventing the adhesion of sea moss, having low toxicity, giving little adverse effect on the surrounding environment and exhibiting excellent adhesion preventing effect by using a specific easily available compound as an active component. SOLUTION: 5-Hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) is used as an active component of the objective agent. 5-Hydroxytryptamine may be synthesized according to the method disclosed in the U.S Patent No.2,715,129, etc., or purchased from the market. The 5-hydroxytryptamine may be added to sea water as it is or applied to the surface of a marine construction by mixing to a coating material, etc. The amount of the preventing agent is 0.1-10μM (preferably 1-10μM) in the case of adding to sea water and 0.2-20μg (preferably 2-20μg) in terms of 5-hydroxytryptamine per 1cm<2> of the surface of the marine construction in the case of applying to the construction such as ship.
