The filter unit comprises a body (1) and a cover (5), e.g. of stainless steel, containing at least one perforated filter holder (3), e.g. of expanded metal, each with a filter element (4) inside it. The body, cover and filter holder all have flanges (6,8,10) which are fastened together with seals (11,17,21) compressed between them, while the flange on the filter holder ensures that it is held centrally inside the filter body. The first seal (11), rectangular in cross-section, is fitted across the upper edge of the body. The second seal is circular in cross-section and the same diameter of the body and cover, and is fitted in line with the edge of the cover, and the third seal fits into an annular recess (22) on in the cover's flange. A number of filter holders can be located concentrically on one above the other.
