The mating piece on a fire hydrant is used for opening and closing the valve. It consists of a rod (21) controlling the valve. It is provided with an actuating element (20) designed to cooperate with a square ended key. The actuating elements consist of two or more flat surfaces (22,23) able to rest against the internal faces of the square ended key. The other part of the joining surface (25) is designed so that it does not offer purchase by a tool other than the correct square ended key.
