The procedure consists of using a probe (2) which is lighter than water and equipped with a sensor to measure a variable. The probe is dropped onto the sea bed by means of a weight (4), and then released so that it rises to the surface, with the sensor taking measurements of the variable on the way. Once the probe reaches the surface it transmits its information to a control centre. A number of probes can be dropped at different locations in the sea from a ship or aircraft, and they can be used to measure depth, pressure, temperature and salinity, for example.
