Amyloid aggregation in animals is inhibited by administering a naphthylazo compound of formula (I), wherein R<1> and R<2> are hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, or complete a heterocyclic ring, R<3> is hydrogen or alkyl, R<4>, R<5>, R<6>, and R<7> are substituent groups. The compounds are especially useful and preventing and treating Alzheimer's disease.
