The invention can be used for creating decorative patterns in solid transparent materials. In a first step, a laser beam is formed with different divergences in two mutually perpendicular planes; during the image-forming process which involves displacing the object, the angle between the plane of greater divergence of the laser beam and the surface of the image section to be formed is altered in accordance with the desired contrast in the given image section.
