On the sheet music changes in the tempo of playing are indicated by a background to the music staves which is of a graduated colour or intensity, e.g. with one colour to indicate a quickening and another a slowing down of the tempo. An increase in the intensity of the colour, for example, shows the player how quickly to increase or reduce the tempo of playing. Other symbols in the form of connecting curves between notes or background colours to individual notes can be used to indicate the rate at which notes are to be played, or the length of pauses between notes. The colours, their intensity and the shapes of symbols are selected so that they do not distract attention from the music.
