Electronic key 1 can communicate with vehicle systems such as central locking 30, and alarm 31 via remote data channel 12. Such commands can be sent by button 4, powered by battery 5, when the key is hand held (position 1a). Engine and gearbox immobilizers 32 and 33 are controlled through close contact data channel 13 when the key is in ignition lock 22 in vehicle 20 (position 1b). If vehicle mounted power supply 23 is supplying power to the key through receiver 6, or if data exchange is taking place via channel 13, button 4 is effectively disconnected. In either case, the key has been inserted, and the immobilizer disarmed. The immobilizer is re-armed only when the key is removed. A second key 1 with remote control can be used at any time, for example, to open the car bootlid. Because that key is not in lock 22, it is not disabled.
