Jigging separator especially for recovery of metal ores

The jigging separator has a housing incorporating at least one compartment with a floor (14) and outlet openings (16, 21). The outlet opening (21) is located at a distance above the floor (14). Also claimed are: (i) the process for extracting a desired fraction from a jigging separator in which one stage is to permit the desired fraction to flow out of the separator in a substantially horizontal direction; and (ii) the procedure for operating a jigging separator in which the material to be treated is caused to separate into a lighter and a heavier fraction, and the heavier fraction is allowed to flow out of the separator in a substantially horizontal direction through an opening, at least a part of which is above the floor of the separator.
