924,448. Milling. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Oct. 27, 1961 [April 14, 1961], No. 38499/61. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A clutch mechanism is provided between the two elements of a splined driving connection to suppress chatter in the splines, the clutch being releasable to allow axial movement of the splined elements. A milling-machine spindle 16 is carried in a quill 20 axially adjustable by a rack-and-pinion mechanism. The spindle is splined at 46 to receive drive from an internallysplined sleeve 26 driven at high or low speeds, from a motor 106 and hydraulically actuated clutch 96, through gears 114, 116, 38 and 114, 116, 120, 34, respectively. Two split taper collets 48, 52 are normally engaged by a spring 58 to produce a chatter damping force between the spindle 16 and the sleeve 26, and are releasable by a piston 66 actuated by oil-pressure supplied by a valve 82 to allow axial adjustment of the spindle.
|
