A motor vehicle steering and transmission control arrangement comprises a console 70, adjustably mounted on a steering column 10, the console mounting a pair of knobs 102 having chain and sprocket connections 94, 96, 88, 90 to the upper end of a steering shaft 18, which shaft permits fore and aft adjustment of the console by a sliding connection 22, and control push buttons 72 for actuating a transmission 76 through a solenoid 74 and lever system 78. Horn buttons 114 are mounted in the knobs 102. The console comprises an upper member 80 and lower member 82 and may be adjusted rearwardly against the action of a spring 71, the lower member 82 having a groove 124 for the reception of the tops of rollers 122 mounted in a carrier 120 secured to the steering shaft 10. An additional series of rollers 136 carried by the member 82 are spring urged against a flange of the carrier 120 so biasing the channel 124 into engagement with the rollers 122. A line of balls 126 is carried in the carrier 120 and the fore and aft location of the console is determined by a pin 140 disposed between the balls and removable therefrom against the action of a spring 160 by actuation of an operating handle 158 acting through levers 152 and 144. The steering mechanism is a power system comprising a control valve 28 having an inner sleeve member rotated by the steering shaft and an outer member 34 connected to a worm 36, relative movement between the sleeve parts causing pressure fluid to flow to one side or other of a power piston 40 integral with a steering nut embracing the worm 36 and having rack teeth meshing with a gear sector upon a steering droparm shaft 44. A centring spring 48 acting between stops 50 and 52 is provided on a rod 60 attached to the piston 40. |
