Thread winder having traversing device with fast direction change

A winding machine for running thread has a traversing device which moves a carriage with a thread guide back and forth by means of belt spans running parallel in opposite directions such that the carriage is driven parallel to the spans in a straight guide by being coupled to the forward running span (5.1) and the reverse running span (5.2). The spans run between a forward driving guide (4.1) and a reverse driving guide (4.2), the carriage is set between the spans and can move freely across the direction of span travel, and force transmitters (36.1, 36.2) can move in this direction so the carriage and one of the straight guides are connected by frictional engagement, i.e. one of the spans is clamped by the carriage and the straight guide.
