PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a pentanoic acid derivative, having the ability to improve the response of γ-aminobutyric acidA (GABAA) receptors and useful for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer diseases, etc.) and nervous dysfunctions (multiple sclerosis, etc.) after cerebral apoplexies or cerebral traumata. SOLUTION: This pentanoic acid derivative is represented by formula I (R<1> is a 1-10C alkyl having one carbon atom substituted with 1-3 fluorine atoms; R<2> is hydroxy, a 1-4C alkoxy, NR3 R4 , etc.; R3 and R4 are each independently H, a 1-4C alkyl, etc.) and, e.g. 5-fluoro-2-propylpentanoic acid is cited. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out the catalytic hydrogenating reaction of e.g. a compound represented by formula II (R<1a> is a 1-10C alkyl having one carbon atom substituted with 1 or 2 fluorine atoms; R<2a> is a 1-4C alkoxy). |
