PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower the erosion of the magnetic gap region of a magnetic head and to improve the balance of the satd. moment of magnetic pole pieces. SOLUTION: The alternate arrangement type bi-directional magnetic tape head of a contact information system gas a magnetic pole end 30 improved in performance by adhering the thin film of a soft magnetic material on a magnetic ferrite substrate (i.e., first magnetic pole piece) 22. The second magnetic pole piece 40 is the thin-film layer of a soft magnetic material. A nonmagnetic ceramic closure block 24 encloses a height adjusting insulation layer 44 and a layer of conductor windings 36 for excitation. The magnetic pole end 30 of the stripes adhered onto the magnetic ferrite extends to the extreme neighborhood of the first conductor winding part and brings the balance of the saturation moment of the magnetic pole piece and, thereby imparting the recording capability of good characteristics particularly in the operation at the rear end mode of the magnetic ferrite.
