PRODUCTION OF FIRE-RESISTANT NONWOVEN FABRIC

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a nonwoven fabric suitably useful as flame-retardant or fire-proof cloths excellent in flame-retardant properties and having high strength even in a low unit weight and high stretchability by allowing the webs of flame-retardant fibers to be treated with a columnar flow whereby integrally entangling the webs. SOLUTION: The tow of acrylonitrile fibers is heat-treated in the air under tension at 200-400 deg.C to form a flaming-resistant fiber with a maximum safe factor of oxygen of >=45. The staple fibers from the flaming-resistant fiber are carded to form web and treated with a columnar flow of water jet to allow the flaming-resistant fibers to be integrally entangled to give a flaming-resistant nonwoven fabric having the strength sufficiently practical even in a low unit weight, for example, at a level of 30g/m<2> .
