摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject beads consisting of carbon fine spheres exhibiting optical anisotropy and having a large specific surface area and expected to be widely used as an adsorbent, a filling material for chromatography, etc., because of a large specific surface area. SOLUTION: The mesocarbon microbeads consist of fine spheres having optical anisotropy obtained by heating a pitch material and have a specific surface area of >=10m<2> /g, preferably 200-700m<2> /g. The beads are produced as follows: for instance, a pitch material such as tar or pitch of coal, or heavy oil or pitch of petroleum is heated in nitrogen stream at 350-500 deg.C for 0.5-10hr to obtain a pitch substance containing 1-25wt.% of mesophase fine spheres in matrix pitch; 0.1-10 pts.wt. of an aromatic oil is added to 1 pts.wt. of the obtained pitch substance; the mixture is heated at 100-400 deg.C for 0.5-4hr; and beads are separated by filtration under heating, etc., followed by washing with a solvent such as quinoline, etc.
