The invention comprises 5a -androst-3-enes having the general formula <FORM:0993588/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical derived either from an inorganic or substituted or unsubstituted lower organic carboxylic acid having from 1-18 carbon atoms and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting 5a -androst-3-en-17-one with a methyl magnesium halide to form the corresponding 17a - methyl - 17b - hydroxy - 5a - androst - 3-ene. Alternatively methyl lithium may be employed. The 17b -hydroxyl group may be acylated e.g. with nitrosyl chloride to form a 17b -nitrite. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic activity and containing the compounds above may be administered orally, perlingually, transcutaneously, or rectally. |
