Liquid reactants are contacted with gaseous reactants by passing the gas in the form of a sheet-like gas stream of substantially rectangular section at least three times as wide as thick, together with the liquid reactant in the form of an annular stream not more than 0À1 inch thick, into an elongated reaction zone of cross-section substantially the same as the gas stream, so that a film of liquid flows down the periphery of the reaction zone, surrounding the gas stream, the liquid compound being cooled prior to, and during, the reaction, and the product being finally separated from the gas mixture. A suitable form of apparatus is illustrated in Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 8, which are respectively a general front elevation, a plan section through the nozzle and annulus, a section in side elevation through the feed and reactor unit, and a section in front elevation through the separator unit. In this apparatus the gas mixture is introduced into the flared conduit 30 which ends in the nozzle 19. Liquid from the supply chamber 24, which is kept flooded, and from which air is previously removed via the air bleed 26, flows through the annular opening 21 between the nozzle 19 and the casing 15 into contact with the gas stream. Cooling is provided by the jacket 27, which is provided with inlet 28 and outlet 29, surrounding the casing 15. The reaction zone may be extended using further independently cooled units 12. In the separator 13, the liquid flows down the walls of the housing 34 and 35 and is removed via the discharge port 36, while the gas exhausts via the escape tube 31 and the outlet conduit 37, any entrapped liquid being withdrawn via the conduit 38 and the valve 39. The use of the apparatus is exemplified by a sulphonation process as described in Specification 1,007,995.
