A self-contained device for generating high-pressure breathing oxygen, comprising a chemical agglomerate (3) for generating oxygen, a sealed containment chamber consisting of a body (1) and a cover (2) and containing the agglomerate, agglomerate igniting means, means for striking the ignition material and means for filtering the oxygen thus generated. The igniting means consist of a compressed mixture of titanium and boron, and the filtering means consist of a mixture of lime or soda lime and a molecular sieve and are distributed and fixed around the agglomerate, as well as in a cartridge comprising a generated oxygen outlet seal. The device is suitable for generating oxygen for medical or paramedical, aeronautical and military use.
